WELCOME TO THE SITE

Words are my only evidence that I have a shadow in this world. Only with a commitment to notebook and pen, early mornings in cold leather-backed chairs or empty dining room tables - and opening my senses - am I able to coax them out.

Body of Work
Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Be sure to check out the “Samples” section. I’ve added even more Urban Times articles. This doesn’t represent the entire body of work I’ve done for the publication, but it’s close.

I began writing for Publisher Christina Boveri in March 2007, about five months before the debut edition of Urban Times. We met at her real estate office on Wyandotte and, after a short review of my resume, I was assigned an audition piece.

She and another editor liked my work, and pretty soon I was churning out articles for her and had no idea what she was doing with them. They were never published. But I was turning in invoices and getting steady paychecks, so I never asked. I thought they might be used as filler in some underground urban newspaper that was little more than classified ads. Who knew?

Then, in July, she passed out this stunning magazine about the same size as Rolling Stone with a sweaty, beaded Boulevard Beer ad on the back cover. I was truly impressed and still am.

The work you’ll find on the Urban Times “Samples” page goes back to October 2007, which was the first cover story I’d ever written for a magazine other than the B2B publications I edit during the day. I remember being completely stunted creatively until Christina sent me a PDF of the cover with the light rail car sliding across a map of Kansas City. I was excited, but I also felt an enormous amount of pressure to deliver, too. If I have time in the next few weeks, I plan on going back and adding those first few pieces.

Oh, and I added a new photo. What do you think?
