The Henry Wiggen Blog
Sunday, March 1st, 2009
My former journalism professor at Park University has partnered with another graduate, Matt Kelsey, to launch The Henry Wiggen Blog. If you are a baseball fan or follow journalism in some capacity, then you’ll love this site. The blog’s unusual name is derived from a fictional ballplayer who narrates a trilogy of baseball stories by author Mark Harris. I’ve posted a few comments in the last week or so, but I’ve neglected to link to them here, until now, because I’d left behind a few typos. Apparently, when you are not a blog’s administrator, you can’t post your thoughts and edit them later when you aren’t so impassioned. I suppose, at almost 34, I should be grateful that I can still be impassioned at all. This is already one of my favorite blogs to read. Check it out and see what you think.

A few typos ain’t nuthin.’ It’s the passion that counts. I had a little come-to-Jesus meeting with my feature writing class recently. I told them the secret to writing in my opinion is not the size of your words, the elegance of your words, the complexity of your words, or how unusual your words are. The secret is how accurate they are. How they are perfect in that spot to describe that thing. The second most important thing is your own passion. And, in the end, what I think I’m reading when I read other people is their own ability to concentrate. Concentration is everything. Quiet the voices, quiet the room, let your mind dictate.
Might all be crap, I don’t know. But I do know a few typos ain’t nuthin.’ Journalism is how good you can be by 2 p.m., not how good you can be.
