When I was a newborn Christian, I was puzzled how some followers could read the prayers of others’ and find any inspiration in them. Now I realize how misguided my thoughts were then. How could they not be inspired? I am not a Catholic, but these two prayers are my favorites besides those found in scripture:
Prayer to Saint Michael
Saint Michael the Archangel,
Defend us in battle,
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil;
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
by the power of God, cast into hell
Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Peace Prayer of Saint Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
